Poor Joins Spirit of Atlanta Brass Team

Andy PoorSpirit of Atlanta is proud to announce that Dr. Andrew Poor has joined the 2016 brass education team in the role of co-brass supervisor.  Chris Moore, Director of Spirit of Atlanta commented  “I am very excited to have Andy join our brass educational team. Andy’s passion for teaching, wealth of knowledge in the activity and talent in composition and arranging are going to enhance an already very strong group of educators we have on staff.”   Dr. Poor joins the lineup of renowned music educators already in place and leading the music program for the corps’ 40th Anniversary season.


Dr. Andrew Poor’s complete bio:

Dr. Andrew F. Poor is honored to be joining the educational team for the 40th Anniversary of the Spirit of Atlanta. He currently serves as the Director of Bands at South Forsyth Middle School in Cumming, Georgia. Previously, he served as Associate Director of Bands and Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Fayette County High School in Fayetteville, Georgia. Additionally, Dr. Poor was on the part-time music education faculty for the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University from 2006-2015. Dr. Poor holds the Doctor of Music Education, as well as, the Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and he previously received the Bachelor of Music Education degree (High Honors) from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. His professional affiliations include: ASCAP, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, National Association for Music Education, Georgia Music Educators Association, National Band Association and the International Trumpet Guild.

As a music educator at all levels, his ensembles have received numerous accolades and given several notable performances including, the 17th International Cultural Festival in Tottori, Japan and the 1997 Florida Music Educators State Conference. His South Forsyth Middle School Symphonic performed at the Southeastern United States Honor Band Clinic in December of 2014, and was the 2014 recipient of the GMEA Middle School Music Exemplary Performance Award. Likewise, the South Forsyth Middle School Band will be a featured performing ensemble at the University of Georgia Middle School Honor Band Festival in December 2015.

Dr. Poor has composed for a variety of ensembles and his commissioned works have been performed at a number of distinguished events, including the Midwest Clinic, GMEA State In-Service Conference, GMEA All-State Band Concerts, University of Georgia Midwest, University of Alabama Honor Band Clinic, Music for All National Concert Band Festival, and numerous local concerts. His wind band and chamber works appear in the catalogs of C.L. Barnhouse, Northeastern Music Publications, and Eighth Note Publications.

Frequently invited to serve as a consultant, adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor, Dr. Poor has presented at the Midwest Clinic, Ohio Music Educators Association State Conference, Florida Music Educators Association State Conference, and at five Georgia Music Educators Association State In-Service Conferences. He has also served as a curriculum consultant to the Cobb County School District, Bibb County Schools, and Polk County School District (Bartow, Florida). Furthermore, his published writings can be found in the Journal for the International Trumpet Guild, Florida Music Director, and the Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning. Dr. Poor served for six years (2000-2005) as the Brass Caption Chair for the Drum Corps International Judge Administration Team, and worked as an adjudicator for DCI for 18 years, including ten World Championships. In 2011, Dr. Poor served on the brass staff of the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps, and has been a member of the Phantom Regiment brass staff since 2012.
