Spirit of Atlanta is proud to announce the 2019 Visual staff. The team will be headed up by Dan Adams (Visual Caption Head) and Bob Smith (Visual Caption Consultant). You may read more about Dan and Bob in a previous article, here.

 

 

 

 

 

Jack Borland

Jack Borland – Assistant Visual Caption Head
Jack has worked with Spirit of Atlanta in the past and will be the Assistant Visual Caption Head for the upcoming season. He has been working as a visual instructor and choreographer for over a decade, including with the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps, Spirit of Atlanta, Music City Mystique and most recently the Madison Scouts. While with these ensembles, he had the responsibility of largely overseeing the visual instruction of the battery percussion, and also the creation and choreography of the movement packages.

Returning Staff

Michael Cowan’s drum corps teaching career began in 2003 on the visual staff at the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps and continued with the Colts, Glassmen, Spirit of Atlanta, and Phantom Regiment. He has also worked with numerous high school and indoor programs in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Texas, and Florida. Eric Fry, a Spirit of Atlanta alumnus (2011-12) and previously on the staff in 2014 & 2017. Eric has also worked with Music City (2013, co-visual caption head in 2015). He currently assists with the Hancock High School Marching band. Another alumnus returning to the visual staff for his third year is Adam Steltenpohl, (member 2011-13, staff 2015, 2018). Adam is currently the Visual Caption Head at Roswell High School and has served as an instructor/clinician for several local high schools, college marching bands, and indoor percussion programs in the Atlanta area as well as Alliance Drum & Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest, and Atlanta Quest.

New Staff

Megan Dolan’s drum corps education stems back to when she was 15 performing with Music City Drum & Bugle Corps (2012). She marched her remaining six seasons with Carolina Crown (2013-18). Megan has also worked as an on-field technician for the BOA finalist group Dobyns Bennett. Shawn Griddine has marched with the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps (2012-16) as well as the Blue Devils (2017-18). He is currently a trumpet player in Kansas City and has worked with many high schools in the area. Brandon Huff spent the last two summers on the visual staff with Music City Drum & Bugle Corps and is currently on the visual staff for Freedom Indoor Percussion as well as the Visual Coordinator for the Belleville East HS Marching Band & Indoor Drumline. Brandon marched with both the Blue Stars (2013-15) and the Bluecoats (2016).

Blake Patton is a Music City Drum & Bugle Corps (2013) and Spirit of Atlanta (2014-15) alumnus. He is an active designer and educator for both indoor and outdoor ensembles across the country. Blake has been on the visual staff at Pacific Crest (2016) and Music City (2017-18). Sarah Rodgers, a senior music student at Western Carolina University, marched with the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps (2017) and is currently in her second year as the head Visual Caption Teaching Assistant with the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band. Aljhun Sindiong was a member of Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps (2013), Spirit of Atlanta (2014), and Blue Knights (2016-17). He also has taught with the Seattle Cascades (2018) and currently works with his alma mater, a two-time BOA Grand Nationals Finalist, Lafayette High School.

Sarah Smith began her drum corps career with the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps (2014) and Phantom Regiment (2015-16). She spent the last two summers with Phantom Regiment on the Administrative staff as a Tour Assistant. She has also marched with many WGI groups including Stonewall Independent (2014-15), Matrix (2017), and Onyx (2017-18). Ryan Springler has most recently served as the Visual Caption Head for the Oregon Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps and currently works as the program coordinator and visual designer at Breakthrough Indoor Percussion, as well as the design consultant at The Guardians. His career as an educator also spans to Pacific Crest, The Academy, Lux Winterguard, the Blue Knights Indoor Percussion, and many high schools. Miranda Stark has marched both mellophone and conducted for the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps (2014-15). She currently serves as the visual caption head/brass instructor at Monarch High School in Louisville, CO where she has taught since 2015.
