Spirit U – a pathway to DCI

Don’t just dream about it – DO IT

Melissa Lanier and Kevin Shull turned their experience at Spirit U into a stepping stone to membership in Spirit of Atlanta

In 2017, Kevin Shull and Melissa Lanier were two students who signed up for Spirit U – looking to get a little closer to their dream of someday marching in a World-Class corps like Spirit of Atlanta. The 3-day camp at Carrollton’s University of West Georgia gave them the opportunity to meet and work with Spirit of Atlanta staff, and to stand alongside the corps and perform at their preview show.

Fast forward to summer 2018 – and both Shull and Lanier have seen the results: they are members of Spirit of Atlanta, working hard to prepare for the summer 2018 tour. Shull says the experience at Spirit U was an important step in earning a spot in the drum corps. “It opened up my eyes to how they do things with the corps. It clicked in my brain that ‘I want to be in Spirit of Atlanta next summer.”

For Lanier, Spirit U was a way to better prepare, and that experience made it “easier to put myself out there during audition. I was able to ask members and staff questions about their experiences,” which turned out to be a tool Lanier says was invaluable.

If you can imagine yourself next summer as a member of Spirit of Atlanta, why not take an important first step? It’s not too late to register for Spirit U. Kevin Shull and Melissa Lanier are shining examples of how helpful it can be. Best of all, Lanier says “you can see how the corps feels like a family.”
