Spirit of Atlanta is excited to announce our 2018 Visual Education team.  Dave McCarthy, an alumnus of the then-Cadets of Bergen County Drum & Bugle Corps and the 1990 Cadets, will be joining the corps this season as Visual Caption Supervisor.  McCarthy has worked and consulted with high school programs all over the country and is currently serving in his 14th year as a visual judge for Winter Guard International (WGI) Percussion Division.  In those 14 years, he has judged nationally for many regional circuits including SCPA, MAPS, SCGC, SAPA, IPA, FFCC, OIPA, MEPA, TCGC, GIPA, as well as in Georgia and across the Southeast.

Joining the Visual Education team as Visual Caption Head is Spirit of JSU alumnus Kevin Morrison, who has also taught Jersey Surf, The Cadets, The Boston Crusaders, and numbers scholastic indoor ensembles (both percussion and guard).  Morrison currently writes music for film, TV, band, and orchestra; he also designs marching band shows for bands all over the country, including Florida, Alabama, and as far west as Arizona.

Jacqie Rotch, our Visual Caption Manager, is back for her third year on Visual (and fitness) staff and eighth season overall with the corps. Rotch is the Visual Caption Head at Spanish Fort High School and teaches visual and movement for Q2 Indoor Drumline.  Spirit Alumnus John Howe returns for his second year on  staff as a Senior Technician.  Howe has also taught the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, Atlanta CV, and consults with local marching band and winter guard programs in Alabama. Our second Senior Technician is returning fourth-year staffer Jacqueline Meyler. A native of Canada, Meyler has worked with numerous DCI programs throughout Canada and the United States including The Sacramento Mandarins, Spirit of Atlanta, and the five-time World Champion W.A.M.S.B. winners, the Calgary Stampede Showband.

Returning Staff

Dan Adams, back for his sixth season with SOA, is an alumnus of the Santa Clara Vanguard (2001, 2003-2006). He has taught at numerous groups in California as well as the Vanguard Cadets, Arizona Academy, Pacific Crest, and former Visual Caption Head at Spirit of Atlanta. He is currently a Trumpet player in the  United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence Band in Fort Benning, GA.

SOA alumnus Adam Steltenpohl (2011-2013) returns for his second year on Visual staff (prev. 2015). Steltenpohl is currently the Visual Caption Head at Roswell High School and has served as an instructor/clinician for several local high schools, college marching bands, and indoor percussion programs in the Atlanta area, as well as Alliance Drum & Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps, and Atlanta Quest. Another alumnus back for a second year is Rayford Levy. A member in 2010, Levy has been on the visual staff with Atlanta CV for the last five seasons and has worked with numerous high schools in the metro Atlanta area since 2008.

New Staff

Josh Davis began his drum corps career with Spirit of Atlanta (2013-2015) and is beginning his drum corps teaching career back at home. Also an alumnus of Atlanta Quest and both Carolina Crown and the Blue Devils, Davis is working toward a Music Business & Marketing Degree at The University of South Alabama while working with other schools’ marching programs in the area.

Colin Chadwick, an alumnus of the Music City Drum Corps snare line (2011-2014), and staff from 2015-2017 is currently the bass tech and assistant batter coordinator at Audio Theater. Chadwick also has indoor marching experience from Chattanooga Independent (2012-2013), Palmetto Percussion (2015) and Music City Mystique (2016).

Jared Triggs, a Senior Music Education Major at Jacksonville State University, is ready to dip his freshly-aged-out toes in the teaching pool. Triggs spent 2012-2015 at Atlanta CV, 2016-2017 at SOA, and 2014-2016 as part of the Marching Southerners.
