2016 Colorguard Staff announced by Spirit of Atlanta

The educational and instructional team for the 2016 40th Anniversary season of Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps is nearly complete.  Director Chris Moore has announced the staff that will lead Spirit’s Guard program this season.

Kevin Griner

Kevin-Griner1Kevin studied Business Management and Marketing at The University of North Florida. He has served as an entertainment performer and stage manager for the Walt Disney Company for over 24 years. He toured as a Disney Entertainer and worked for 12 months on board the Big Red Boat representing Disney.

Kevin wrote and created the Auxiliary workshop “Auxiliration” for Disneys Magic Music Days, in addition to hiring and training all color guard clinicians for the workshop.

He is a color guard adjudicator for Heritage Festivals, OrlandoFest, and Festival Disney Music Competitions. Kevin is a also a color guard adjudicator for the Florida Bandmasters Association and a winter guard equipment judge for the Florida Federation of Judges Association.

Kevin serves as Color Guard Director for the University of Central Florida Marching Knights and WGI Open Class Gold Medalist Pegasus Winter Guard. He is a sought-after color guard Director and Designer for numerous outstanding high school visual programs. He was a member of the Bronze Medal Winning Alliance of Miami Winter Guard in 1991 as well as a twenty-five year member and instructor in the Winter Guard International and Drum Corps International activities.

Griner states “My goal for this years Colorguard is to set a strong movement and dance foundation which will give this guard a fresh and contemporary feel along with amazing choreography that will set this team up for continued success and growth in the competitive arena.”

Jarret Thompson

Jarret ThompsonJarret grew up in Central Florida and started his Colorguard career with his high school guard.  He went on to March several years with the award winning Fahrenheit Winterguard.  Jarret then went on to continue his winteguard career as a main performer with the Northeast Independent Winterguard in North Florida. Jarret has taught many programs around Florida including WGI finalist University High School. Jarret is a founding staff member of the Pegasus Winterguard program and the director of the Lake Howell High School Colorguard program. Jarret is an amazing weapon and flag choreographer and trainer.

George Furlipa

George FurlipaGeorge grew up in St Augustine Fl. He was a vital part of the award winning WGI World Finalist Coast One Winterguard.  George went on to perform with Northeast Independent for many years before moving to Ohio to perform with The Pride of Cincinnati.  George moved back to Orlando and took the lead choreographer role at Pegasus Winterguard as they won Open class and was promoted to World the following year in which George took an additional role as a performer. George is now teaching several top Colorguards including Onyx Winterguard in Ohio.  His foundation of fitness and health combined with his amazing choreography skills make him an amazing addition to the staff.

Travis Gerke

Travis GerkeTravis Gerke is originally from Wisconsin where he attended college at the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse. While attending school, he became involved with colorguard as a performer with the Blue Stars in 2006 and 2007, and aged out with Phantom Regiment in 2008. After aging out, he moved to Florida and performed with several WGI World Class winterguards, the most recent being USF World Winterguard in 2013. Travis was also recently offered a contract to perform with the reigning WGI World Class champion Santa Clara Vanguard Winterguard for the upcoming 2016 season.

As an educator and choreographer, Travis has been integral in the development of programs across the Midwest and in his current home state of Florida. He choreographs each year for his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse, and has also taught and choreographed at Boone High School, Dr. Phillips High School, and several other programs around Florida. Travis is currently the director of West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida, and is the principle choreographer for the WGI finalist UCF Pegasus Open.



Leah J. Pinder

Leah PinderLeah J. Pinder began her colorguard career with the Farragut High School Marching Admirals from Knoxville, Tennessee. After graduating she continued her love for the marching arts through drum corps and winterguard performing with the Florida Wave Drum Corps, The Blue Devils, and The Alliance of Miami Winterguard. After aging-out, Leah went on to instruct and choreograph for The Colts Drum Corps from 1992 – 2001, Nuendo Winterguard 97-2000, and Southeast Independent Winterguard 2013-2014. She has been the movement instructor/choreographer for the Seminole HS World winterguard since 2010 and is starting her second season with Pegasus Open winterguard.

Leah has her Bachelor of Fine Arts in modern dance performance from The University of South Florida. After graduating she taught modern dance technique at USF, St. Petersburg College, and The University of Tennessee. She has been dancing/choreographing professionally since 2004 dancing with Moving Current Dance Collective from Tampa, Fl, Anoikis, and Circle Modern Dance from Knoxville, Tn. Leah is a founding member of a modern dance company, Momentum Dance Lab, also from Knoxville, Tn. She now lives in Clearwater, Fl with her husband and two children.
